Sometimes I stare at the ceiling
Imagining that the brush strokes were still wet while I enfilade the air above me with my fingers
Assembling them into piles
That are harvested by gravity
Imbibed by mass
Splattered like the remains of wingless flies on the windshield
There is nothing soulless about remains
There is a certain intrepidity about corpses
Even ones that seemed purely instinctual when alive
Even things that are merely lacerated lifeless tools
We see intrepidity
And this is where I imagine the paint dripping slowly back up onto the ceiling
But this time it is a painting with intentions behind the image
And I see brush strokes that writhe with the same intestinal fortitude of a unstable sneering lip curl
Sometimes I like to suck the air in through the side of my mouth
Switching it from cheek to cheek
Feels like cold sheets in between my toes
Tastes like the water the dentists sprays and sucks out of your mouth
It just feels so good
And then I come down
Light is muted
Finespun by eyelids
and then cut
by the rapacious scissors of a fate
Alpenglow in my eyes
St. Elmo’s Fire in my heart
Bass drums in my head
And I want more
